Rescue teams in Japan are searching for survivors after a major earthquake struck Kyushu, with at least 13 confirmed dead and fears the casualty count could rise.

Search and rescue operations are continuing in southwestern Japan following a powerful earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu island. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed that at least 13 people have died, though officials warn the final figure could reach into the dozens as emergency crews reach remote areas.

Dozens of injuries and extensive infrastructure damage, including collapsed bridges and severe road fractures, have been reported. In Kashima, rescue workers are attempting to reach people trapped inside a damaged shopping center where a floor collapsed and an explosion occurred. Initial tsunami warnings issued shortly after the tremor were subsequently lifted.

Discrepancies remain regarding the seismic intensity, with BBC News reporting a magnitude of 6.8, whereas Der Standard, ORF, and TV 2 Nyheter cited a magnitude of 7.1.
