Ceuta crisis deepens as local authorities report massive arrivals and Madrid faces political fallout

Spanish authorities face political friction and administrative challenges as thousands of migrants remain in Ceuta following recent border surges.
Tensions persist following the migration crisis in Ceuta, as local and national authorities struggle to manage the situation. Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas stated that up to 80,000 migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave on July 30, estimating that between 3,000 and 5,000 remain in the city. In response, Spanish legionnaire units have begun gathering migrants for summary returns at the border.
Meanwhile, political fallout escalated in Madrid. The central government dismissed a National Security Department communications officer following the publication of an unauthorized alert citing 49,000 entries. Internal friction between the Interior and Defense ministries has also emerged regarding border operations. Morocco reported that 40,000 individuals approached Ceuta and confirmed 11 fatalities on its soil, while local authorities in Ceuta established a missing persons bureau to address up to 88 estimated deaths.
