Canary Islands renews calls for Madrid to clarify migrant minor responsibilities

Canary Islands authorities have called on the Spanish central government to establish clear guidelines for managing unaccompanied migrant minors under new EU migration rules.
The regional government of the Canary Islands has raised fresh concerns regarding administrative responsibilities for incoming unaccompanied migrant minors following the adoption of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum.
Sandra Rodríguez, the director general for child protection in the Canary Islands, stated that authorities still lack a standardized framework to determine legal representation for children arriving on the archipelago's shores. Rodríguez emphasized that the regional executive has consistently "extended a hand" to the Spanish state to establish unified operational guidelines. However, jurisdictional questions regarding administrative duties and legal guardianship remain unresolved between the regional administration and central authorities in Madrid.
