European migration pact reopens dispute over migrant minor care in Canary Islands

The European migration pact has reactivated a jurisdictional conflict between the Canary Islands and Spain's central government over managing unaccompanied migrant minors.
The implementation of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum has reignited a jurisdictional dispute between the regional government of the Canary Islands and the Spanish central government regarding the management of unaccompanied migrant minors.
Sandra Rodríguez, the director general for child protection in the Canary Islands, stated that authorities still lack a unified criterion to determine who represents children upon their arrival on the archipelago's coasts. While the regional administration maintains it has repeatedly sought cooperation with Madrid, unresolved legal and operational questions persist over administrative responsibilities and guardianship for incoming minors.
