The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina declared a day of mourning for five climbers who died during an expedition on Mount Elbrus in Russia.
The Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina declared July 28, 2026, as an official day of mourning following the deaths of five Bosnian mountaineers on Mount Elbrus in southern Russia.
The five victims were part of a seven-person expedition that encountered severe weather and lost its path near an altitude of 5,100 meters. Emergency responders recovered all five bodies after two surviving members managed to alert authorities. The deceased include two mountain rescue service operatives, a physician from Zenica, and two members of a local mountaineering association.
In Russia, the Investigative Committee initiated criminal proceedings regarding potential death by negligence involving multiple individuals, with officials working to reconstruct the event's precise timeline.
