Wildfires trigger evacuations across Greece as Southern European heatwave persists
Thousands have been evacuated in Crete as wildfires rage across Southern Europe, while returning tourists and residents face widespread destruction.
Wildfires across Southern Europe continue to trigger emergency evacuations and widespread damage, while domestic authorities in Norway address fire service infrastructure challenges. On the Greek island of Crete, officials evacuated approximately 8,000 residents and visitors from the southern village of Agia Galini as flames threatened the Rethymno region. Elsewhere in Greece, about 90 Norwegian tourists on Lesbos were cleared to return to their hotels near Plomari after temporary evacuations.
Across France and Spain, more than 300,000 people have been displaced by unprecedented summer blazes, with residents returning to destroyed properties. Meanwhile, climate campaigners are demanding financial contributions from major petroleum exporters, including Norway, to aid disaster recovery efforts. Separately, Norwegian officials in Drammen reported that firefighters experienced technical issues with six water supply points during a major local fire in Krokstadelva.
