Wildfires in southwestern Europe threaten Bordeaux, forcing up to 325,000 evacuations across France and Spain as Spain declares a state of emergency.

Emergency crews in southwestern Europe are fighting to control sprawling wildfires that now threaten the suburban fringes of Bordeaux. Extreme heat and intense winds continue to push flames across France's Gironde department, where over 42,000 hectares have burned and roughly 220,000 residents have been evacuated. Regionally, overall displacement figures across France and Spain range between 250,000 and 325,000 people.

Spanish authorities have declared a national state of emergency, while French officials investigate suspected deliberate ignitions in the Var region following several simultaneous blazes. The disaster has severely disrupted infrastructure, forcing the closure of key rail corridors, including the line between Bordeaux and Biarritz, and causing alterations to the Tour de France route. Firefighting efforts remain hazardous due to volatile atmospheric conditions generated by the fires, which have already claimed the lives of two firefighters.
