Severe wildfires across southwestern France and central Spain have forced over 250,000 people to flee as flames approach Bordeaux and prompt a national emergency near Madrid.

Unprecedented wildfires across southwestern France and central Spain have forced more than 250,000 people to evacuate. In France's Gironde department, strong winds pushed flames toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area, scorching over 42,000 hectares. Authorities issued additional evacuation orders for tens of thousands of residents as emergency crews struggled to contain the blazes. The disaster has claimed the lives of two French firefighters, severed the Bordeaux-Biarritz railway line, and forced adjustments to the Tour de France route. Meanwhile, Spanish authorities declared a national emergency west of Madrid after three blazes merged into a single fire that officials warned exceeded containment capacity, displacing over 30,000 residents.
