US President Donald Trump has paused 50% tariffs on Canadian imports for three days, citing a preliminary trade deal pending document finalization.

US President Donald Trump has paused the implementation of 50% tariffs on Canadian imports for three days, stating that both countries have reached a tentative trade agreement.

The announcement came late Tuesday, mere hours before the punitive duties on billions of dollars in Canadian goods were scheduled to take effect. Posting on social media, Trump stated that the tariffs were suspended "based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!"

The temporary reprieve averts an immediate escalation in cross-border trade friction as officials from Washington and Ottawa work to finalize the formal documentation before the deadline. The tariff dispute had threatened extensive commercial ties between the two neighbours.
