US files torture charges against former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and wife

US prosecutors have added conspiracy to commit torture to the federal charges facing ousted Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
United States federal prosecutors have added charges of conspiracy to commit torture against ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
The pair have been held in US custody in New York following a military raid in Caracas in January. The new accusations build upon existing indictments involving drug trafficking and firearms offences, which the couple has previously denied.
According to court filings, the updated charges allege that detainees, including political opponents and American citizens, endured beatings, waterboarding, and sexual violence while held by Venezuelan security forces under Maduro's administration.
