Trade talks between Canada and the US have collapsed, prompting 50% US tariffs to take effect and triggering dollar-for-dollar Canadian retaliatory measures.

Trade negotiations between Canada and the United States have collapsed without an agreement, allowing 50% US tariffs on Canadian imports to take effect on Saturday. Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc had held intensive discussions in Washington in an attempt to avert the measures.

Following the breakdown, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that Ottawa will enact equivalent retaliatory tariffs dollar for dollar to protect domestic businesses and workers. Carney stated that last-minute modifications demanded by the US administration were unfair, economically unsound, and undermined the reliability of future bilateral deals. The implementation of reciprocal surcharges marks a sharp escalation in cross-border trade friction between the two North American allies.
