Tokyo and Washington have launched a rare joint intervention in foreign exchange markets to stabilize the Japanese yen following a 40-year low.

Following historic lows for the Japanese currency, Tokyo and Washington have confirmed joint market operations involving billions of dollars to halt the yen's drop against the US dollar. Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama stated that the coordinated yen purchases were designed to curb "excessive volatility and disorderly movements," noting that ongoing consultations with American officials would continue.

US President Donald Trump described the intervention as a "signal of friendship" aimed at stabilizing both domestic and global market conditions. Analysts noted that the move also addresses American economic concerns, as a wider sell-off in Japanese assets could have placed additional upward pressure on rising US Treasury bond yields. While the currency experienced an immediate rebound, market observers remain cautious regarding the long-term effectiveness of the intervention.
