UNESCO adds West Bank and Lebanese heritage sites despite Israeli objections
UNESCO has designated the West Bank site of Sebastia and southern Lebanese castles as World Heritage sites, overruling formal objections from Israel.
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has officially inscribed the ancient archaeological site of Sebastia in the occupied West Bank and several historical fortresses in southern Lebanon onto its World Heritage List. Among the newly designated Lebanese locations is the prominent Crusaders-era Beaufort Fortress. The decisions were approved during a committee session despite strong resistance from Israel, which had urged members to reject the applications. Israeli officials raised formal objections regarding the heritage status of these locations situated in areas under its military presence or ongoing territorial disputes. UNESCO's listing aims to offer enhanced international protection and recognition to these culturally significant landmarks.
