UN chief Guterres to convene new 5+1 talks on Cyprus issue

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has announced plans for a new multilateral 5+1 conference on the Cyprus problem following meetings in Nicosia.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has announced plans to convene a new multilateral "5+1" informal conference regarding the long-standing Cyprus issue. The decision follows a joint meeting in Nicosia with Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.
According to Guterres, both Cypriot sides as well as the three guarantor powers—Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom—have consented to the upcoming talks. The Secretary-General emphasized that adequate preparation concerning methodology and confidence-building measures will precede the conference.
Following the discussions, Erhurman voiced optimism about the renewed diplomatic efforts, remarking that he was "more hopeful" about reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem than before the visit.
