Ukrainian lawmakers prepare to vote on Yevhen Khmara for defence minister as military leadership undergoes major restructuring.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has formally submitted a proposal to parliament to appoint former intelligence chief Yevhen Khmara as Defence Minister, with a vote scheduled for Wednesday, 19 August. Lawmakers will simultaneously consider confirming Andrii Sybiha as Foreign Minister.

The parliamentary vote comes after the dismissal of Mychajlo Fedorov from the defence post, an action that prompted public opposition. Following his removal, Fedorov alleged widespread corruption and governance issues, calling for national elections despite the ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, newly installed Commander-in-Chief Mychajlo Drapatyj has begun restructuring the military hierarchy to eliminate informal patronage networks and reform high-level command operations.
