Ukraine seeks more air defenses amid interceptor shortages and EU progress

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested more air defense interceptors while announcing progress on EU accession and receiving €1.4 billion in immobilized Russian asset interest.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Western partners to increase air defense support, revealing that interceptor missile deliveries in 2026 have fallen to one-third of the levels received in 2025. In a discussion with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Zelensky highlighted the urgency of securing additional interceptor systems as Russian missile and drone strikes against Kyiv and key southern ports intensify.
Despite mounting military pressures, Kyiv reported advancement on its diplomatic and financial fronts. Zelensky stated that Ukraine fulfilled all necessary criteria to open four additional negotiation chapter clusters for European Union accession. Simultaneously, the EU disbursed a fifth tranche worth €1.4 billion to support Ukrainian defense procurement. The funds were derived from interest accrued on immobilized Russian Central Bank assets during the first half of 2026.
