US CIA Director John Ratcliffe secretly visited Moscow under direct orders from Donald Trump to warn Russia against targeting NATO allies and urge talks on Ukraine.

Unannounced travel by US Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe to Moscow on 25 August was secretly ordered by President Donald Trump without the knowledge of several senior White House aides and military officials, according to media reports citing informed sources.

Ratcliffe arrived in the Russian capital via Latvian airspace aboard a C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft. During high-level discussions with Russian intelligence officials, the CIA chief reportedly reaffirmed Washington's commitment to NATO's Article 5 collective defense clause and explicitly warned against any aggression targeted at Western allies. Ratcliffe also raised the prospect of restarting peace talks regarding Ukraine and urged Moscow to curtail its expanding military cooperation with Iran.

Neither Washington nor Moscow has officially disclosed full details of the agenda.

    • Українська правда Skeptical Highlighted the strict secrecy of the mission and framed White House attempts to minimize its importance as awkward.
    • NV Alarmed Framed the visit primarily as a direct intelligence-backed warning to Vladimir Putin against planned military escalations toward NATO.
