Swiss voters have overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to enforce stricter political neutrality rules, allowing the government to maintain sanctions against Russia.

Swiss voters have decisively rejected a popular initiative aimed at enforcing a stricter interpretation of the country's political neutrality. Final results show that approximately 70 percent of voters rejected the proposal, which was spearheaded by the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP) and the group "Pro Schweiz".

The initiative sought to constitutionally prohibit Switzerland from adopting non-UN sanctions, such as those imposed by the European Union against Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The measure would have also placed further restrictions on cooperation with foreign military alliances. Opponents argued that the restriction would isolate the nation diplomatically and hinder its security interests. The outcome allows the Swiss government to maintain its current neutrality framework and continue participating in international sanctions regimes.
