Spanish central and local authorities remain divided over arrival estimates and border management following a major migrant surge in Ceuta.

Six days after a massive border surge at El Tarajal, significant discrepancies persist between Spanish central and local officials regarding the scale of arrivals in Ceuta. Regional President Juan Vivas stated up to 80,000 migrants crossed, while central authorities estimate only 2,500 remain, including roughly 500 unaccompanied minors. Local autonomous leadership claims the remaining figure is closer to 6,000.

Meanwhile, administrative and political friction has intensified. Spain's government dismissed a National Security Department communications official for a "loss of trust" after an online alert cited 49,000 arrivals. Tensions also emerged between the Defense and Interior ministries over military personnel carrying out border turnbacks.

As local officials report 88 deaths linked to the crossings, the Guardia Civil established a dedicated office to trace missing individuals and manage body identifications.
