Record heat has pushed Rhine water levels to historic lows at Kaub, threatening shipping and prompting German states to ease lorry bans to keep supply chains moving.

Record temperatures and prolonged drought across Western Europe have pushed water levels in major rivers to historical lows, with the gauge at Kaub reaching its lowest point since 1880. Hydrological authorities, including the Baden-Württemberg Low Water Information Center, reported that no significant relief is expected in the coming days as severe heat continues.

The falling water levels threaten to disrupt commercial navigation along Germany's primary inland shipping corridor. Industry representatives warned that the middle section of the Rhine could soon become unnavigable for heavy barges, effectively splitting the freight network into two separate segments. In response to mounting transport bottlenecks, several German federal states have relaxed Sunday driving bans for heavy goods vehicles to facilitate land transport, though staffing shortages and road infrastructure constraints continue to complicate logistics.
