Persistent heat and drought across Western Europe have pushed water levels on the Rhine to historic lows, raising concerns over potential disruptions to commercial freight traffic.

Water levels across major waterways in Western Europe continue to fall following unprecedented temperatures recorded in June and July. According to hydrological authorities, measuring points along the Rhine, including Cologne and Kaub, have reached historic record lows, with further drops anticipated across key stations such as Düsseldorf, Duisburg-Ruhrort, and Emmerich.

The persistent drought presents severe challenges for commercial freight transport. The Federal Association of German Inland Navigation warned that critical bottlenecks in the middle section of the Rhine could soon disrupt uninterrupted vessel transit, effectively dividing the waterway into two distinct transport segments. Hydrological experts from the Baden-Württemberg Low Water Information Center indicated that no immediate weather relief is expected to ease the situation.
