A study based on British poultry farms reveals organic free-range egg production generates significantly higher greenhouse gas emissions than caged systems, though broader impacts remain unmeasured.

A new study analyzing data from British poultry farms indicates that producing organic free-range eggs may generate nearly twice as many greenhouse gas emissions as conventional caged farming methods.

According to researchers, free-range laying hens require more resources and land, which drives up the overall emissions per egg produced. However, the study's authors emphasized that their analysis focuses primarily on greenhouse gas output and does not encompass all environmental impacts. Key ecological factors, such as pesticide usage, soil health, and the broader effects of various farming practices on local biodiversity, were not accounted for in the evaluation.

While caged systems demonstrate lower greenhouse gas intensity per unit, organic farming continues to be favored by consumers for its animal welfare benefits and lower chemical reliance.
