Moldova urges energy savings as Romanian drought strains regional power grid

Moldova's Energocom has called on citizens to cut electricity consumption during peak hours as low water levels on the Danube strain power production in neighboring Romania.
Moldovan state energy company Energocom has called on citizens to reduce electricity consumption during peak evening hours, specifically between 18:00 and 23:00, to help ease regional market pressures.
The appeal follows an alert in neighboring Romania, where electricity generation has dropped due to significantly reduced water flow along the Danube River. Energocom warned that diminished Romanian hydropower output could force Bucharest to rely more heavily on imports, driving up wholesale electricity prices across the broader regional market.
Because Moldova depends on regional energy interconnectors and imports, authorities cautioned that shifting market conditions could directly affect domestic costs. Residents were advised to avoid using energy-intensive appliances during the designated peak period.
