German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared post-WWII trans-Atlantic ties "probably over" for now after US President Donald Trump celebrated the far-right AfD's state election win.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned that the era of unconditional trans-Atlantic ties established after World War II is "probably over" for now, following a breakdown in relations with US President Donald Trump. Merz cancelled a scheduled call with Trump after the US leader publicly celebrated the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) for its state election victory in Saxony-Anhalt.

Addressing the Bundestag, Merz clashed with AfD leader Alice Weidel, labeling her party a "destructive force" whose migration platform threatens Germany's economic stability. Despite its classification as an extremist group by domestic intelligence, the AfD won nearly 44% of the vote and has initiated talks to assemble a governing majority.
