Ukraine pursues domestic weapons as Patriot delays prolong defense gap
Ukraine is developing native ballistic missiles and purchasing precision glide bomb kits to counter Russian attacks as Patriot production faces delays.
Ukraine is seeking to counter intensifying Russian ballistic missile strikes while facing a long-term shortage of Western air defense systems. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that producing U.S.-designed Patriot air defense interceptors under license will require up to several years because of American regulatory delays and licensing procedures.
To address immediate defense gaps and diminish reliance on foreign arms, Kyiv is pursuing domestic alternatives. Two Ukrainian companies are developing native ballistic missiles, though technical challenges continue to hinder mass production. Concurrently, Ukrainian forces are procuring the domestically produced "Equalizer" precision glide bomb kit. Developed by DG Industry with the Brave1 defense incubator, the system converts standard unguided bombs into standoff precision munitions compatible with both Soviet-era aircraft and Western fighters. Analysts note these interim measures aim to alleviate critical vulnerabilities as missile strikes target key infrastructure.
