Critically low water levels on the Rhine are straining supply chains across Western Europe as Dutch authorities implement historic water restrictions and battle wildfires.
Extremely low water levels along the Rhine River are increasingly disrupting commercial freight across the Netherlands and Germany. Decreased vessel capacities have driven up transport costs, forcing some industrial firms to prepare for potential adjustments to production.
Concurrently, regional authorities in the western Netherlands have enacted historic conservation measures. The Delfland water board issued a complete ban on surface water extraction for residents, businesses, and municipalities. Key locks along the Nieuwe Maas in Rotterdam were also closed to all marine navigation to safeguard regional freshwater supplies.
In the southeast, emergency services supported by water-dropping helicopters continue fighting an uncontained wildfire in Limburg's Boschhuizerbergen reserve. The blaze covered approximately 100 hectares, prompting campsite evacuations near the German border.
