Latvia urged to diversify Rail Baltica funding across EU programs

European Parliament Vice-President Roberts Zīle warned that Latvia is relying on limited EU funds for Rail Baltica compared to its Baltic neighbors.
European Parliament Vice-President Roberts Zīle stated that Latvia has not been sufficiently active in seeking funding for the Rail Baltica infrastructure project across various European Union financial mechanisms.
According to Zīle, Latvia has primarily relied on the Connecting Europe Facility, along with limited allocations from the Recovery and Resilience Facility to connect the railway with Riga Central Station. In contrast, neighboring Baltic nations have actively pursued and secured resources from additional EU financial programs.
Looking ahead to the upcoming EU multiannual financial framework, 50 billion euros are proposed for the main transport infrastructure instrument, though the Baltic region as a whole will require substantial funding to complete the cross-border project.
