Italian public trust in AI drops amid economic and regulatory concerns

Public trust in AI in Italy has fallen to 49% as concerns rise over job losses, tax revenue impacts, and tech industry regulation.
Public confidence in artificial intelligence is declining in Italy amid broader economic and regulatory concerns. According to a recent SWG survey for Fondazione Lottomatica, positive views on AI among Italians fell from 68% in 2020 to 49%, while public concern grew from 23% to 45%.
The shift coincides with anxieties over labor market disruptions, with estimates linking AI to roughly 425,000 job losses globally over the past three years, as well as potential imbalances in national tax revenues. Simultaneously, major technology companies face scrutiny for attempting to limit government regulatory oversight. Despite growing public skepticism, Italian figures retain a visible presence in global development, notably through Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei.
