Italian MEPs clash over suspension of Schengen controls and EU migration strategy

Italian MEPs Dario Nardella and Carlo Fidanza voiced opposing views on suspending Schengen border controls and Europe's broader migration strategy.
Italian members of the European Parliament from opposing political factions have presented starkly different views on the temporary suspension of Schengen border checks and European migration policy.
Dario Nardella of the opposition Democratic Party criticized the suspension as a "gesture constructed for internal propaganda" that inflicts economic damage during peak tourism season without securing borders. He accused the Italian government of disrupting European agreements while demanding solidarity from allies.
Conversely, Carlo Fidanza, European Parliament delegation leader for the ruling Brothers of Italy party, argued that Italy has set the agenda on European migration control. Fidanza defended border measures, claiming opposition to these policies leaves critics like Madrid increasingly isolated while pointing out that similar actions by other member states faced little pushback.
