Italy's governing coalition faces deadlock over EU recovery funds and defense policy, while military personnel prepare for a Saudi Arabia deployment.

Italy’s ruling coalition faces internal division over domestic reforms and defense policy amid broader international developments. In Rome, a decree linked to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan remains stalled in the Chamber of Deputies due to disagreements over EU-mandated tenders for intercity rail services, placing between €1 billion and €3 billion in funding at risk.

On foreign affairs, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani outlined plans to request €14.9 billion from the European Union's Safe fund for armaments, prompting coalition partner Lega to demand parliamentary oversight. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also indicated readiness to suspend Schengen border rules with Spain following a migrant influx in Ceuta. Furthermore, Italy will deploy 400 military personnel to Saudi Arabia for airspace protection against Iranian missiles. Meanwhile, unratified plans for Gaza’s disarmament and power transfer drew praise from Donald Trump.
