Institute of International Finance CEO Tim Adams warned that higher interest rates will cause government borrowing costs to surge despite recent inflation masking debt risks.

Tim Adams, chief executive officer of the Institute of International Finance, has warned that rising long-term interest rates pose significant risks to sovereign debt sustainability worldwide.

Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg, Adams explained that elevated inflation recently helped conceal underlying fiscal weaknesses by temporarily stabilizing national debt-to-GDP ratios. However, as benchmark interest rates remain high, government debt-servicing expenses are expected to surge substantially.

Adams highlighted that the escalating cost of borrowing will place increased pressure on public budgets, particularly in emerging markets and heavily indebted nations. He emphasized that policymakers must address long-term structural debt vulnerabilities as the temporary fiscal relief provided by inflation fades.
