Google study reveals 86 percent of generative AI use occurs outside work

Google's new ATLAS study reveals that 86 percent of generative AI use occurs outside work, though national adoption rates strongly correlate with GDP per capita.
A new study published by Google indicates that the majority of generative artificial intelligence usage takes place outside professional environments. According to the initial report from the Activity, Task, Landscape, and Adoption Study (ATLAS), 86 percent of user interactions with generative AI tools occur during non-work hours for personal daily tasks.
The research analyzed 15 million interactions across more than 150 countries to examine global adoption trends. Despite the heavy skew toward personal use, researchers found that individual adoption rates correlate directly with a nation's gross domestic product per capita. The findings challenge the perception that generative AI is primarily an enterprise tool, highlighting its integration into everyday routine activities.
