DAX companies reported record second-quarter profits while continuing to cut domestic jobs, spurring debate over Germany's competitiveness and labor standards.

Germany’s major listed corporations achieved record financial results in the second quarter, even as domestic industrial employment continues to decline. An analysis by consultancy firm EY revealed that combined operating earnings for the 40 DAX member companies increased by nearly 16 percent to 52.6 billion euros, supported primarily by strong international sales.

At the same time, tens of thousands of industrial positions have been eliminated across the country, with the automotive sector facing particularly swift workforce reductions. The growing contrast between high corporate earnings and shrinking domestic payrolls has intensified discussions regarding Germany's economic competitiveness.

In response to the economic climate, prominent business leaders have called for adjustments to labor policies. Nikolas Stihl, advisory chairman of power tool manufacturer Stihl, stated that "in good times Germany could afford the 35-hour workweek," but argued that the country can no longer maintain it under current conditions.
