France orders remote learning for hundreds of schools amid escalating youth unrest

French authorities directed up to 500 high schools to shift to remote learning after youth blockades turned violent, destroying school infrastructure and disrupting public transport.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened an interministerial crisis meeting at the Interior Ministry following escalating violence and arson during nationwide high school blockades. Education Minister Édouard Geffray stated that the demonstrations had shifted into "urban violence," reporting that 24 educational institutions were damaged or set on fire, including the entrance hall of the Nelson Mandela High School in Nantes.
To ensure safety, authorities directed between 400 and 500 secondary schools to move to remote instruction on Monday ahead of a planned inter-union strike on Tuesday. Unrest also disrupted public transit in several major cities, including Marseille, where a bus driver was assaulted, and Strasbourg. Student organizations called for a second wave of mobilization to demand increased funding and prompt replacement of absent teachers.
