Europe faces a fourth summer heatwave as Italy issues red alerts, Austria records an all-time high of 40.8°C, and France reports thousands of excess deaths.

Extreme heat continues to affect large parts of Europe as a fourth summer heatwave brings temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius. Italian health authorities issued red weather alerts across all 27 major cities, advising the public to avoid sunlight during peak hours following at least four heat-related deaths.

Record temperatures were also registered elsewhere on the continent. Austria recorded an all-time high of 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna, while French health authorities reported over 7,300 excess deaths following 52 days under heatwave conditions between May and July.

The persistent heat continues to fuel severe drought conditions and elevated wildfire risks. Further extreme weather is expected as France and the United Kingdom prepare for additional high temperatures, reflecting a broader trend after multiple global regions recorded their hottest July on record.
