Europe faces a fourth heatwave this summer, with red alerts in Italy, record highs in Austria, and thousands of excess deaths reported in France.

Southern and Western Europe continue to face intense summer weather as a fourth heatwave brings extreme temperatures to the region. Italian authorities issued red health alerts for all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, with temperatures expected to hit 40 degrees Celsius. Officials advised the public to stay indoors between 11:00 and 18:00 and take precautions such as staying hydrated.

In Austria, a national temperature record was set in a suburb of Vienna, where mercury reached 40.8 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, French health authorities reported over 7,300 excess deaths linked to 52 heatwave days since May. Further north, Britain and France continue to prepare for persistent heat, severe drought conditions, and an elevated risk of wildfires across affected regions.
