Forensic experts begin DNA analysis after Kosovo war remains exhumed

Forensic experts begin DNA testing on mortal remains exhumed from three sites in Zubin Potok, Kosovo, to identify victims of the 1998–1999 war.
Forensic experts have initiated DNA testing to identify the mortal remains of at least 23 individuals exhumed from three locations in northern Kosovo's Zubin Potok municipality. The exhumation phase concluded on August 21, shifting efforts toward a complex identification process coordinated by Kosovo's Governmental Commission on Missing Persons and international partners.
Samira Krehić, Western Balkans program head for the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), stated that the recovery represents only the initial phase of identification. Genetic profiles obtained from the recovered bone samples will be cross-referenced against reference DNA provided by families of individuals missing from the 1998–1999 conflict to confirm victim identities.
