Firefighters stabilize Gironde wildfires as heatwave warnings expand across France
Firefighters stabilize wildfires in Gironde and Var as France prepares for expanded heatwave alerts across 16 departments.
French emergency services continue to combat persistent wildfires across southwestern and southern regions. Despite 14 separate flare-ups reported in the Gironde department on Tuesday, local authorities confirmed that "the fire is still stabilized". Meanwhile, in the Var department, firefighters successfully contained the blaze in the Gros Bessillon area.
The regional prefect announced that evacuated residents in Le Haillan and parts of Mérignac and Eysines may return to their homes, provided they remain prepared for potential re-evacuations.
Conditions are expected to worsen as weather agency Météo-France announced that 16 departments, including Gironde and Landes, will be placed under an orange heatwave alert on Wednesday, alongside 14 departments in central-eastern France.
