Extreme heat persists across Europe as Austria records a historic 40.8°C high and French authorities report over 7,300 excess heat-related deaths.

A severe heatwave continues to grip Europe, pushing temperatures past historic thresholds and causing widespread health emergencies. Austria recorded its highest temperature on record at 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna, while French health authorities reported over 7,300 excess deaths linked to 52 heatwave days since May.

In Italy, health officials issued red alerts for all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as the country faces its fourth major heat period of the season. Authorities have advised citizens to avoid outdoor exposure between 11:00 and 18:00 following at least four heat-related fatalities.

Meanwhile, Britain and France are bracing for another surge with forecasts reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius, compounding ongoing drought and wildfire risks across Western and Southern Europe.
