A severe summer heatwave brings red alerts to 27 Italian cities, record highs to Austria, and thousands of excess deaths in France.

A persistent summer heatwave across Europe continues to trigger severe public health warnings and record-breaking temperatures. In Italy, health authorities placed all 27 major national urban centers under red heat alerts as temperatures were expected to hit 40 degrees Celsius. Austria registered a new national high of 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna, while French officials reported over 7,300 excess deaths linked to extended periods of extreme heat since May.
