Czech social services reported over 10,000 child abuse and neglect cases last year, prompting legislative proposals to accelerate court interventions amidst calls for structural support.

Annual reports from Czech social protection services show that authorities identified over 10,000 vulnerable children affected by abuse, neglect, or mistreatment in the past year, marking the highest level in up to two decades. Social services removed 3,616 children from their families, representing an increase of 300 over the previous period.

Child welfare advocates and legal experts warn that official statistics represent only a fraction of actual cases. Organizations such as Centrum Locika and the public defender of rights emphasized that systemic shortcomings, including a lack of clear operational guidelines and insufficient specialized support services, contribute to avoidable family removals.

In response to rising numbers, the Ministry of Justice proposed legislative changes to accelerate judicial proceedings by bypassing lengthy expert evaluations in domestic abuse and custody disputes.
