A large-scale cyberattack on connected refrigeration systems affected over 500 supermarkets in France, causing widespread food spoilage and millions in losses.

French authorities have launched an investigation following a major cyberattack that targeted internet-connected refrigeration systems across hundreds of supermarkets nationwide.

Overnight, hackers breached temperature control software, raising unit temperatures to as high as 50 degrees Celsius. The sudden heat surge spoiled tons of perishable goods, including dairy and meat, and sparked several fires. Major retail chains such as Intermarché, Coopérative U, and E. Leclerc were hit, with over 500 locations affected and financial damage estimated in the tens of millions of euros.

The Paris prosecutor's office opened an inquiry into the breach, while French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu instructed cybersecurity agency ANSSI to lead investigations. French authorities are collaborating with European counterparts amid reports that similar sabotage attempts may have impacted commercial chains in Belgium and the Netherlands.
