Casualties rise as search operations continue following Colombia earthquake

Rescue operations continue across western Colombia following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck on 10 August near San José del Palmar, with tremors felt across the region and in neighbouring Ecuador. A national state of emergency remains in place as emergency teams and military personnel comb through rubble for survivors.

Casualty reports continue to vary as official assessments develop. Moldova1 reported that the death toll had reached at least 164, while Digi24 and Ziarul de Gardă cited at least 132 dead and more than 500 injured. Earlier coverage from Adevărul and HotNews reflected preliminary counts of dozens dead. Colombian authorities warn that the casualty count may rise further as search efforts proceed and emergency shelters are established for displaced residents.
