Canada has unveiled C$28 billion ($20 billion) in retaliatory tariffs on American goods after trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington broke down.

Canada has formally implemented counter-tariffs targeting C$28 billion ($20 billion) in American goods after bilateral trade negotiations with the United States collapsed. The measures match 50 percent levies introduced by Washington under Section 338, which hit approximately five percent of Canada's annual exports south.

The Canadian counter-tariffs apply to a wide range of products, including steel, furniture, fresh tuna, and cotton apparel. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the suspension of further trade talks, pledging a "dollar-for-dollar" response alongside support packages designed to protect domestic industries and workers from economic disruption.

The escalation follows the failure of late-stage negotiations aimed at averting the American duties, marking a significant breach in trade relations between the historic allies. Washington had previously threatened additional tariff increases if Ottawa responded to the initial levies.
