Canada announced dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on US imports following the collapse of bilateral trade talks with Washington.

Following the collapse of bilateral trade negotiations, the United States has enacted 50 percent tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, affecting roughly five percent of Canada's total annual exports to its neighbor. Targeted items include manufactured products ranging from hockey sticks to medical equipment.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced matching retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on nearly C$28 billion ($20 billion) in American imports. The countermeasures cover products including steel, apparel, furniture, and agricultural goods. Ottawa is also deploying financial support packages to cushion domestic businesses and workers from economic fallout.

US President Donald Trump cautioned that additional import duties could be introduced if the trade impasse remains unresolved.
