Bulgaria leads in relative energy storage capacity, says former minister

Former Environment Minister Julian Popov says Bulgaria is leading in relative battery storage capacity, though regulatory frameworks lag behind technological growth.
Bulgaria has emerged as a relative leader in installed battery storage capacity, according to former Environment Minister Julian Popov. Speaking on national television, Popov noted that energy storage represents the future of the power sector, with initial major installations developed on a commercial basis before additional projects received backing through the national Recovery and Resilience Plan.
However, Popov characterized the rapid expansion as somewhat chaotic, stating that political leaders and regulatory frameworks have struggled to keep pace with advancing technologies. Despite these governance challenges, private entrepreneurs continue to see strong commercial viability in expanding battery infrastructure across the country.
