British Columbia sues OpenAI over Tumbler Ridge school shooting

British Columbia is suing OpenAI for failing to report ChatGPT threats made by a gunman prior to the February mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge.
The Canadian province of British Columbia has filed a lawsuit in California against OpenAI, alleging the artificial intelligence company failed to report warning signs ahead of a deadly mass shooting in February. Attorney General Niki Sharma stated that the firm should have alerted law enforcement after 18-year-old shooter Jessie Van Rootselaar posted concerning interactions and threats on ChatGPT.
The attack in Tumbler Ridge resulted in eight deaths, including six children at a school, as well as the gunman's mother and half-brother. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously issued an apology to the community in April, expressing regret that the company did not contact police prior to suspending the suspect's account.
