An 18-year-old has confessed to a suspected anti-LGBTQ+ killing in Lower Austria, as newly published annual statistics highlight rising violent hate crimes across the country.

An 18-year-old suspect has admitted to killing a 29-year-old man in Langenzersdorf, Lower Austria, with prosecutors identifying the homicide as a hate crime linked to the victim's perceived sexual orientation. Law enforcement officials confirmed the full confession following interrogations led by the Korneuburg public prosecutor's office.

The incident emerges as newly released government statistics indicate a sustained presence of bias-motivated violence in Austria. Official figures show that 1,575 individuals were targeted in violent hate crimes over the past year. Offenses motivated by sexual orientation rose by 4% to 330 documented cases, with homophobia accounting for 90% of those specific incidents. Men represented 62% of all recorded victims, while women accounted for 32%.
