Holocaust survivor Saul Blau, now 95, reflects on surviving Auschwitz after concealing his age during selection in 1944.
Saul Blau, a 95-year-old Holocaust survivor currently residing in the United States, has shared his experience of surviving the Auschwitz concentration camp. Born in Hungary during the interwar period, Blau was deported in 1944 alongside more than 500,000 Hungarian Jews following the German occupation.
Upon arriving at the camp, Blau avoided immediate execution by concealing his real age, allowing him to be selected for forced labor instead of extermination. He credits his survival through extreme conditions to resilience and maintaining hope. Reflecting on his ordeal decades later, Blau emphasized the crucial importance of perseverance, noting that "the main thing was to never give up."
