The US launched sweeping economic measures against Iran as Tehran keeps the Strait of Hormuz blocked and regional tensions between Washington and Tel Aviv surface.

The United States has announced an unprecedented campaign of economic isolation against Iran after diplomatic talks failed to produce a broader agreement. US officials framed the measures as a severe economic offensive targeting both Tehran and entities that provide assistance to the country.

In response, Iranian authorities reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed to commercial traffic until Washington honours all terms outlined in a 14-point memorandum drafted in June, including sanctions relief, the unfreezing of overseas funds, and lifting blockades on Iranian ports. Maritime tensions escalated further following the seizure of a United Arab Emirates-linked oil tanker by Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces near Qeshm Island over alleged maritime regulation breaches.

Simultaneously, diplomatic friction has emerged between Washington and Tel Aviv after US officials criticised Israeli plans to retain forces in southern Lebanon, despite Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz maintaining that troops will not withdraw from occupied areas across Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza.
